Fire alarm systems for commercial buildings
ISTFIRE designs, installs, inspects, tests, maintains and repairs fire alarm systems in commercial buildings across northern New Jersey, from single-tenant stores to multi-tenant office buildings, mixed-use properties and warehouses. We have done this work from our Newark headquarters since 2000.
Our clients are the people responsible for those buildings: property managers, facility directors and managers and building owners, along with the general contractors, electrical contractors and engineers who build and renovate them.
Commercial buildings we work on
- Office buildings and multi-tenant commercial properties
- Retail stores, shopping centers and restaurants
- Multifamily and mixed-use buildings with commercial ground floors
- Warehouses, distribution centers and light industrial buildings
- Hotels, private clubs and event venues
- Medical offices, assisted living and senior housing
- Fuel stations and auto service facilities
- Houses of worship and community buildings
Keeping existing systems in service
Most commercial work is on systems that are already installed. We take over inspection and service of systems from many manufacturers, including systems put in by other contractors, and give you one written record of the system’s condition. For older systems whose parts are no longer stocked, we source legacy and discontinued equipment to restore them to full operation. When the panel cannot support what the building needs, we lay out the options: replace the control panel and reuse compatible wiring and devices, or replace the system in phases while the building stays open.
New systems and renovations
For new construction and major renovations, we can deliver the full system or work alongside your electrical contractor under our Parts & Smarts model: we supply the equipment, programming and commissioning while the electrician installs the wiring.
Inspection reports that answer the fire official
Commercial buildings in New Jersey are inspected by the local fire official under the Uniform Fire Code. After every inspection and test, you get a written NFPA 72 report listing what was tested, the results and any deficiencies, with pricing for corrections. It is the document fire officials, insurers and owners ask for.
Tenant fit-out?
If a tenant space needs new devices tied into the landlord's fire alarm system, we program, test and document the additions, and coordinate with building management and the fire official.

Commercial fire alarm questions
We also work with
What types of commercial buildings do you service?
Office and multi-tenant buildings, retail stores and restaurants, multifamily and mixed-use properties, warehouses and industrial buildings, hotels and clubs, medical offices and assisted living, and other commercial occupancies across northern New Jersey.
Can you add fire alarm devices for a tenant fit-out?
Yes. We extend the base-building system for tenant spaces, program the new devices, test them with the rest of the system and document the work for the landlord and the fire official.
Do you service commercial fire alarm systems installed by other companies?
Yes. We inspect, test and repair systems from many manufacturers. If a proprietary panel needs manufacturer software for programming changes, we tell you before work begins.
How often does a commercial fire alarm system need to be inspected in New Jersey?
NFPA 72 sets testing frequencies by component, and many items are tested annually. The Uniform Fire Code and your local fire official determine the schedule for your building, and we plan inspections around it.
Can you take over our fire alarm monitoring?
Yes. We transfer the account to our monitoring service, reprogram or replace the communicator as needed, and confirm that alarm, supervisory and trouble signals are received at the central station.
Can you find parts for an older or discontinued commercial fire alarm panel?
Yes. Sourcing legacy and discontinued fire alarm equipment is a core part of our business. We supply and install the panel cards, power supplies, modules and devices needed to restore the system, and verify compatibility before installation.
